ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - In honor of the 10th anniversary of their first championship, the UCF Cheerleading Team is traveling to Paris this November to compete in the 2013 European Cheerleading Championships.
The cheerleading team is recognized worldwide for their talents as the Knights have placed in the top-10 of the College Cheerleading National Championships 18 times in the last 20 years under head coach Linda Gooch, including national titles in 2003 and 2007.
This outstanding opportunity was given by Varsity Brands, the company that hosts the College Cheerleading National Championships. Linda Gooch, the head coach of the cheerleading team, spoke with Carl Olsen of Varsity Brands about the idea of reaching out to some cheerleading teams from around the world. Because of the team's great successes, Olsen thought the UCF Cheerleading Team would be the perfect team to compete.
"It could not have worked out more perfectly," Gooch said. "We have to take advantage of this. It was destiny,"
Twenty members of the team were picked to travel. The members were chosen based on which positions were needed to perfectly complete the selected performance. Those 20 members are planning to depart to Paris on Oct. 31 and compete on Nov. 2. They are spending 5 days and 4 nights in Paris while staying at Disney's Hotel New York Convention Centre. The weekend of the championship falls on one of the team's only bye-weeks in which they do not have an event to participate.
"The team is extremely excited and highly anticipates this competition" Gooch said. "Even the parents think this opportunity is unbelievable. It's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
