ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert announced the 2009 cross country schedule on Tuesday, with two home meets again highlighting the Knights' schedule. The seven-meet slate includes the season-opening Black & Gold Invitational at the UCF Cross Country Complex, which opened in 2008 as the first on-campus home of the program.
The Black & Gold Invitational is set for Sept. 12. At last season's Black & Gold Invitational, UCF claimed the title in the second week of the season, claiming six of the race's top eight spots. The Knights then hit the road for the first time to compete in the Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., on Friday, Sept. 18.
On Sept. 26, the Knights return to its home facility to host the UCF Invitational. The following Saturday, UCF heads to Titusville to compete in the FLRunners.com Invitational on Oct. 3. The Knights will go to the event as the defending champs after seeing their top five runners set personal bests in a dominating performance a season ago.
The last two events of the regular season will also be in the Orlando area as UCF will compete in the Disney Classic and the Hatter Invitational on back-to-back weekends. The two meets will be on Oct. 10 and 16 in Lake Buena Vista and DeLand, respectively.
The Conference USA Championships are set for Saturday, Oct. 31 in Houston, Texas. UCF finished in eighth place a season ago.
The NCAA Regionals are set for Nov. 14 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In 2008, went to the NCAA South Regionals and finished in 18th place.
Eight returning runners highlight the roster for Smith Gilbert, who is in her third season at the helm of the UCF track and field and cross country programs.
