ORLANDO - Junior right-hander Mike Billek struck out five and allowed just two earned runs in game one while sophomore right-hander Tim Bascom struck out a career-high 10 batters in game two as UCF swept a doubleheader from Monmouth, 6-4 and 8-3, Saturday at Jay Bergman Field.
The two wins raise UCF's record to 11-2 overall, its best start since the 1996 season when the Golden Knights opened the year 15-2. Monmouth dropped to 0-3 with the pair of losses Saturday.
In the game one victory, UCF tied a season-high with five errors, but still found a way to win. The Hawks grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second as Monmouth took advantage of a UCF error to score an unearned run.
UCF scored two in the home half of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Drew Butera laced a single to center field to score a run and Chandler Rose drove in a run on a RBI-groundout to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
Monmouth collected two runs of its own in the third to regain the lead 3-2. Nick Massari doubled to bring in a run and Massari later scored on a wild throw by Marshall Bernhard at third base.
UCF took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Monmouth added one run in the seventh to close out the scoring at 6-4.
Billek limited the Hawks to four hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Derek Abriola pitched the ninth for his second save of the week. Abriola was in control, throwing only nine pitches for the save.
Butera led UCF with two hits in the game one victory.
In game two, the UCF offense came alive and Bascom was dominant. The Dunedin native totaled 10 strikeouts - the most by a UCF pitcher in 2005 - and limited the Hawks to one run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The UCF offense scored eight runs on eight hits, including two hits by Courtney Propst
, John-Michael Howell
and Tyson Auer
. Propst drove in three runs while Auer scored two and drove in one for the victors.
The Golden Knights return to action Tuesday, March 1 at Bethune-Cookman. Ray Rodriguez will get the start on the hill for UCF. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
