The Knights (6-4) gave up a three-run lead in the fifth, but showed excellent resiliency to battle back and tie the game in the eighth before ultimately being edged in the Rebels (10-1) final at bat.

The series finale is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, and can be heard online via UCF All-Access subscription. RHP Sam Smith (1-0, 2.61 ERA) will start for Ole Miss against a to-be-determined pitcher for UCF.

Junior Tommy Williams had a big day at the plate as he went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the fifth. The Palm Beach Gardens native now has three home runs in his last eight games this year after not recording a single long ball over the first 61 games of his collegiate career. Williams reached base two more times after being hit by pitches.

Making his third-consecutive Saturday start, RHP Spencer Davis was unable to keep his winning streak alive as he received a no-decision. The Woodlands, Texas native allowed nine hits and four earned runs to go along with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings before being lifted in the fifth. Sophomore Zac Favre appeared for the second-straight day and retired the only two batters he faced.

Junior Derrick Salberg gave the Rebels’ pitching staff fits all afternoon as he went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. The Kelso, Wash., native leads UCF in several offensive categories including batting average (.386), hits (17), runs (14) and on-base percentage (.460).

Trailing 4-3 in the top half of the eighth, the Black and Gold tied the game on an RBI groundout by junior James Vasquez. Vasquez, who had his six-game hitting streak snapped, plated Salberg who had reached earlier in the frame on a single and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Freshman Trent Thompson (0-1) was tagged with the loss in the 10th. Thompson, who struck out a pair over two perfect frames in the eighth and ninth, gave up the lead-off homer to Allen on a 2-0 pitch. Junior Joe Marotta pitched two hitless innings in the sixth and seventh, walking just one while recording a strikeout.

UCF took the lead right away in the top of the first. With runners on first and second and two out, junior Erik Barber ripped a single into left field that scored Salberg and put the Knights up 1-0. The RBI was Barber’s team-leading 11th of the season.
