Jacksonville, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshman and Windermere native Chris Taladay produced three doubles and a two-run homer in a 14-8 UCF victory at Jacksonville Tuesday. The Knights improved to 30-19 overall thanks to 17 total hits against the Dolphins (22-23).
The victory also was UCF's 14th-consecutive non-conference win. The 1995 Knights also had a stretch of 14-straight out-of-conference victories, while the school record is 28 in 1986 when the Black and Gold was an independent program.
Individually, Beau Taylor extended his hitting streak to 15 games, while Taladay fell one double shy of tying the school record. The third baseman finished with 10 total bases as his homer was his eighth of the season. Just behind him in the lineup, Ryan Breen and Alex Friedrich each banged out three hits.
After UCF stranded a runner at second with one out in the top of the first vs. righty Glenn Witkowski, JU greeted Knights' starter Brennan Dobbins with a pair of two-out runs in the home half.
When the visitors stepped back into the box in the second, they immediately got runners to second and third thanks to a leadoff walk to Jonathan Griffin and a two-bagger by way of Taladay. Even though Breen fell behind 0-2 in the count, the freshman sliced an outside pitch the opposite way and through the left-side for a RBI single. Still with nobody out, Friedrich also went between second and third for his RBI base hit and just like that it was tied up at 2-2. But the momentum quickly came to an end when Michael Holmes' sac bunt attempt was popped up, turning into a double play.
Unable to grab the lead, the Knights witnessed the Dolphins load the bases in the second with one out but Dobbins induced the inning-ending 4-3 double play with Chris Connelly at the plate to keep it at 2-2.
That proved to be a huge turning point. A one-out, two-base error allowed Chris Duffy to get on in the third. While Witkowski picked up out No. 2, Taladay, Breen and Friedrich all produced base hits to permit UCF to score three unearned runs for the 5-2 advantage. Then in the fourth, Duffy also connected for a two-out hit, lacing a RBI single into center to score Taylor from second.
The runs continued to pile up in the fifth. Opened up with a double by Breen, Friedrich hammered a RBI triple into the right-center gap. UCF then added RBI from Holmes and Darnell Sweeney to push it to 9-2.
JU did deliver one run in the bottom of the fifth, and the Knights answered immediately with two in the sixth. A walk to Duffy and Taladay's third double of the evening set it up for Breen, who laced a shot over to first that Alex Martinez could not handle. That pushed two runs across for the visitors.
With a commanding 11-3 lead, UCF's defense helped JU in the seventh where the Dolphins tried to mount a comeback with three runs. But once again UCF responded in the eighth. Following a first-pitch double from Griffin to lead it off, Taladay smoked a 1-1 offering over the right-center wall for his fourth hit vs. JU. Later in the frame, Holmes singled in Breen for UCF's 14th run and that would be more than enough for the win.
UCF will now conclude its 2010 home schedule when it hosts East Carolina in a three-game C-USA set this weekend, as well as Florida Atlantic Tuesday. The series with ECU will open up Friday at 6:30 p.m. while Senior Day takes place before game two Saturday at 4 p.m.
