ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - With the 2014 season just around the corner, the UCF baseball team will field a 2014 squad that features 24 newcomers. UCFKnights.com will introduce you to each fresh face with a Q and A session as part of the "Know Your Knights" series.
Junior pitcher Joe Marotta joins the Knights after earning two letters at the College of Central Florida under the tutelage of Marty Smith. Earned Conference Honorable Mention honors as freshman and All-Conference 2nd Team as a sophomore.
Question 1: Why did you choose to play for the Knights?
JM: My school colors in high school were black and gold so I’ve been bleeding black and gold since berth. Since my freshman in high school I knew I wanted to come here. It was meant to be.
Question 2: What's been the biggest adjustment you've had to make to the college game so far?
JM: Getting used to a schedule Juco was just far less scheduled. Here its field, breakfast, pregame, early work, lunch, class, study hall, practice, weights. It can be overwhelming if you don’t have time management.
Question 3: Who's your favorite MLB player and team, and why?
JM: My favorite player all-time is Greg Maddux. Now it’s Sergio Romo because I can see myself being better than him one day. He throws about 88-89, but he has a great slider. If my slider is on, I’ll dominate like he does. If its not, then I may struggle like he does sometimes. My favorite team is the Yankees.
Question 4: What's your favorite thing to do when you're not on the field?
JM: I’m a big nerd so I’ll play online multiplayer games like Halo, Halo Wars, Call of Duty on the Xbox. I’m a big time gamer, whenever the team is playing they want me on their team because I’m the offense and the defense.
Question 5: What is your favorite restaurant in Orlando?
JM: Huey Magoos. Do the coaches read this? Then I’m going to go with the grilled salad, no ranch with a light dressing. If I had a dream pick, I’d go with a fried plate with extra fries and an extra piece of toast because I’m carb loading. On Tuesdays, I cheat a little bit and go with 1/4th lemonade and 3/4ths tea. I call it an “Arn” Palmer.
Question 6: What's your favorite TV show?
JM: Right now its Naruto because I’m a nerd like I said. All-time, Dragon Ball Z. I have every episode on my laptop and watch them religiously.
Question 7: What will your walkup song be?
JM: "Time to Say Goodbye” by Bocelli. It’s Italian opera. Never been done before and when the crowd realizes what it is, they are going to go crazy.
Question 8: What country would you most like to visit?
JM: Greece because of the culture. I’m a big fan of Roman culture.
Question 9: What parts of your game are you trying to improve?
JM: Putting guys away. Last year I had outstanding numbers, but the talent level is a lot better here so just putting hitters away.
Question 10: What's your favorite thing about Orlando?
JM: People are friendly. I didn’t expect people to be so friendly.
Question 11: What's one thing your teammates would be surprised to know about you?
JM: I am without a doubt one of the best duelists in this city when it comes to Yu-Gi-Oh! I am a big time card player and I’m actually going to the gaming academy tonight to trade some cards and work on my harpies deck. It’s pretty beastly, no pun intended.
Question 12: Who is the guy in the clubhouse that keeps it most upbeat? People have said you.
JM: Tyler Martin and I keep it classy in there for sure. James Vasquez keeps to himself a lot, but when he does actually talk he’s underrated funny.
Question 13: Nickname of your first little league team?
JM: The Mustangs.
Question 14: What non-athlete would you want to meet most and why?
JM: Mozart. I am a big piano guy and listen to classical music when I go to sleep.
Question 15: If you could have one superpower, which would you choose?
JM: If anything, I would go with the ability to levitate. Just to blow people’s minds. You see a guy flying and it’s like “oh that guy’s flying” but if you see someone and just go “hey good morning” and levitate like a ghost, people would be freaked out.
Question 16: At which store would you like to max out a credit card?
JM: Zaxby’s. I would get mozzarella sticks for days and pass them out to the youth. I’ve actually looked into purchasing my own chain of Zaxby’s. My teammate from my juco came to the conclusion that if we both had chains, he’s from north New Jersey and I’m from south Florida, we would have a compass Zaxby’s industry.
Question 17: What's the farthest you've been from home?
JM: Here. Don’t you live just an hour and a half away? I’ve only been out of the state two times, both times to East Cobb for baseball tournaments. I’ve never seen snow.
Question 18: If you were selecting movies for a bus trip, what would you pick first?
JM: V for Vendetta, Jet Li’s Fearless, Road Trip and Me, Myself and Irene.
Question 19: Most played song on your iPod?
JM: I always listen to “I’m Me” by Lil’ Wayne before I pitch so I’d say that one.
Question 20: Dream date?
JM: My grandma. She a classy lady and any time I go out with her it’s always nice. She’s taken me out enough so it would be nice to take her out and actually pay for it.
