ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - With the 2014 season just around the corner, the UCF baseball team will field a 2014 squad that features 24 newcomers. UCFKnights.com will introduce you to each fresh face with a Q and A session as part of the "Know Your Knights" series.
Freshman pitcher Robby Howell was a four-year letterwinner on the Fort White baseball team under head coach Mike Rizzi. As a senior, he compiled a 7-3 record with a 1.59 ERA on the mound in 14 appearances with four complete games.
Question 1: Why did you choose to play for the Knights?
RH: When I came here for my visit I fell in love with the campus and everything about it. I only live 2 1/2 hours away, so it was a natural fit.
Question 2: What's been the biggest adjustment you've had to make to the college game so far?
RH: Time management. It's been hard adjusting to being at the baseball complex for an extended amount of hours and then having school as well.
Question 3: Who’s your favorite MLB player and team, and why?
RH: Greg Maddux and the Braves. When I was younger, my grandpa was a huge Braves fan, so from the time I was two years old until probably six, I'd go to his house every day and watch the Braves with him. Maddux's command was so impressive. His visual velocity, he only threw 89-90, but he made hitters believe it was much harder.
Question 4: What's your favorite thing to do when you're not on the field?
RH: Hanging out with the guys. I really like to play basketball, but I don't get much time to play right now.
Question 5: What is your favorite restaurant in Orlando?
RH: I like Chipotle the most.
Question 6: What's your favorite TV show?
RH: The League. That show is great.
Question 7: What will your walkup song be?
RH: "Big Poppa" by Notorious BIG.
Question 8: What country would you most like to visit?
Question 9: What parts of your game are you trying to improve?
RH: My command first. Velocity next.
Question 10: What's your favorite thing about Orlando?
RH: I'm from a small town, so getting to come to a much bigger area like this and meet all kinds of people is really cool.
Question 11: What's one thing your teammates would be surprised to know about you?
RH: I'm probably the best basketball player on the team and maybe the best baseball-playing basketball player around.
Question 12: Who is the guy in the clubhouse that keeps it most upbeat?
RH: Tyler Martin definitely. That guy is nuts.
Question 13: Nickname of your first little league team?
RH: The Ballers.
Question 14: What non-athlete would you want to meet most and why?
RH: Mark Wahlberg. He's awesome.
Question 15: If you could have one superpower, which would you choose?
RH: I'd like to fly. I think it would make the road trips a lot more interesting.
Question 16: At which store would you like to max out a credit card?
RH: Best Buy of course.
Question 17: What's the farthest you've been from home?
RH: Indiana. I have a lot of family up there, but I don't love the cold weather.
Question 18: If you were selecting 3-4 movies for a long bus trip, what would you pick?
RH: Stepbrothers, The Other Guys, Iron Man 3, and Lone Survivor.
Question 19: Most played song on your iPod?
RH: I play "Big Poppa" a lot because it reminds me of that Keanu Reeves movie Hardball. My dad would tell me to sing myself songs on the mound to relax, so I did. I never wore the headphones like the kid did in the movie, but my dad would stand in the crowd and wave his hands at me to remind me. I also listen to "Honest" by Future right now.
Question 20: Dream date?
RH: My girlfriend, Ashley.
