UCF-Siena Game Notes
ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The 42nd season of UCF baseball has finally arrived as the Knights kickoff their 2014 campaign on Friday with Opening Knight against Siena at the UCF Baseball Complex. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. and will feature free admission for all fans courtesy of CFE Federal Credit Union.
Due to an event at CFE Arena on Saturday, Garage F will be charging $5 per vehicle. Free parking for the 4 p.m. baseball game will be located in the baseball grass lot behind the baseball scoreboard, the E8 surface lot located off of Orion Blvd and the E6 & E7 grass lots located off of Orion Blvd at Bright House Networks Stadium. Two former Knights, Ben Lively and Chris Taladay, will hold a special place in UCF baseball’s Tradition Room as they will be inducted into the “Knights of Honor” before Friday's action. Taladay earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors a season ago, and Lively was selected in the fourth round (No. 135 overall) of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Cincinnati Reds.
Aiming to give the Knights a strong start to the season will be junior LHP Eric Skoglund. The Sarasota native will be making his first Opening Knight start after amassing six wins in 31 career starts during his first two years in Orlando. He will be opposed by Saints’ lefty, Matt Gage (6-6, 3.42 ERA), who defeated Skoglund in their head-to-head matchup last season on Feb 16, 2013.
The rest of the weekend pitching matchups will see junior RHP Spencer Davis (4-2, 3.32 ERA), making his first-career start after 28 relief appearances a season ago, paired up with RHP Ed Lewicki (4-3, 3.92 ERA), while Sunday’s 1 p.m. matinee pits freshman RHP Robby Howell against RHP Brian Goosens (1-5, 3.64 ERA).
UCF is a perfect 5-0 on Opening Knight in head coach Terry Rooney’s tenure, including double-digit run totals in three of the five contests. Overall on the first weekend of the year, the Knights own a collective 14-3 record since 2009, and a 39-4 all-time mark against the Saints.
While the game can be heard live on AM 740 The Game with “The Voice of the Knights” Marc Daniels on the call, UCF will be all over the airwaves on its flagship station Friday as both “Open Mike” and the “Beat of Sports” will air live from the baseball complex from 6-9 a.m. and 9-12 p.m. To watch and listen to all the home games in 2014, fans can use UCF All-Access.
