ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF baseball team swept the weekly American Athletic Conference awards on Monday for the second time this season. Thanks to their strong performances on the road against USF, junior pitcher Eric Skoglund was recognized as the Pitcher of the Week and junior shortstop Tommy Williams was Player of the Week.
Skoglund outdueled USF’s Jimmy Herget in a battle of aces on Friday night. The Sarasota native allowed just five hits and two walks in eight shutout innings to go along with eight strikeouts. Skoglund, who became the first UCF pitcher to be honored three times in one season since Matt Fox in 2004, leads The American in strikeouts (50) and innings pitched (59). The award is his third in the past four weeks, with the lefthander allowing no earned runs and striking out 27 batters over 26 innings in those three weeks.
The last time the Knights swept hitter and pitcher of the week honors was two weeks ago when Sam Tolleson (hitter) and Skoglund (pitcher) received the accolades.
Williams hit .333 (4-for-12) and blasted three home runs in the series victory against South Florida. The North Palm Beach native hit a solo home run on Saturday night as part of a 2-for-4 game, then set new career-highs with a pair of two-run homers and four RBIs in Sunday’s series-clinching victory. Williams now leads The American with nine home runs, more than double his closest competitor, who sits at four.
The Black and Gold are the only team in The American to sweep the weekly awards since honors began on Feb. 17.
UCF will return to the field Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for a midweek contest against in-state rival Miami. Wednesday night's matchup with the Hurricanes will serve as UCF’s “Pink in the Park” game. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive pink shirts to promote breast cancer awareness.
