OMAHA, Neb. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF Baseball’s Eric Skoglund has been named to the Gregg Olson Award Watch List, which recognizes the nation’s Breakout Player of the Year, as announced on Tuesday.

Skoglund has been key to the Knights’ (32-20) success in 2014, taking the mound as UCF’s ace from the first pitch of the season.  Now, as the squad aims to win the American Athletic Conference regular season championship in final weekend of the season, Skoglund will be on the mound in game one yet again.

The 6-foot-7 left-hander has a record of 9-1, while leading the league with 86 strikeouts.  His 1.72 ERA ranks third in The American, and he is the first UCF pitcher to throw three complete games in a season since 2005.

Last year Skoglund went just 1-4 with a 5.08 ERA in 10 starts as a sophomore.  His strikeout-to-walk ratio was just 26-to-29, in comparison to this year’s current mark of 86-to-22.

Skoglund has been named The American Pitcher of the Week four times this season.  He joins Houston’s Aaron Garza, Memphis’s Bryce Beeler, and Rutgers’ Pat Sweeney on the Watch List from The American.

The award is named after former Auburn Tiger star pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All American, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All Star. Like Olson, these players have elevated their game to an elite level and in many instances their team has mirrored their success as a direct result.

Initial nominations were made by sports information/media contacts from schools across the country. The finalists and winner will be determined by an independent panel.

Semifinalists are slated to be named, Friday, May 20th at the start of NCAA Regional play and the finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6th at the beginning of Super Regional action.
