ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – After an impressive junior season, Eric Skoglund was named a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award on Friday. The award honors college baseball’s breakout player of the year.
Skoglund was integral to the Knights’ success in 2014, leading UCF to a second place finish in the American Athletic Conference regular season. The 6-foot-7 left-hander led the Knights with nine wins and 94 strikeouts on the mound.
Finishing the campaign with a 2.54 ERA, Skoglund improved upon his 5.08 ERA and 1-4 record as a sophomore in 2013. For his efforts, the Knights’ ace was a unanimous selection to the All-AAC First Team and was named The American Pitcher of the Year.
There were 36 college baseball players named as semifinalists on Friday. The finalists for the Gregg Olson Award are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6th. The winner will be named in Omaha during the College World Series.
ABOUT THE GREGG OLSON AWARD
The award is named after former Auburn Tiger star pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All American, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All Star. Like Olson, these players have elevated their game to an elite level and in many instances their team has mirrored their success as a direct result.
Initial nominations were made by sports information/media contacts from schools across the country. The finalists and winner will be determined by an independent panel.
