ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - In Kirk Speraw's third campaign at UCF, the head coach guided the Knights to the 1996 NCAA Tournament, where they faced top-seed Massachusetts in Providence, R.I. The Minutemen, led by Marcus Camby, led by just four points at halftime before pulling away for a 92-70 victory.
UCF and UMass will meet for the first time since that game on Nov. 13 in Orlando. The contest at the UCF Arena will serve as the season opener for both squads.
UMass head coach Derek Kellogg, who is in his second year with the Minutemen, is certainly familiar with the Knights. Before taking the job in Amherst, he spent eight years as an assistant coach at Memphis under John Calipari. Kellogg played at UMass from 1991-95 under Calipari, who coached the Minutemen in 1996 when they met the Knights.
UMass returns one of the top players in the Atlantic 10 Conference in senior guard Ricky Harris. He averaged 18.2 points a year ago. Freshman swingman Terrell Vinson was listed as one of the top-100 prep players in the country in 2008-09 and is expected to contribute as a rookie.
Season tickets for the 2009-10 campaign are currently on sale. New season ticket orders are currently being accepted by the UCF ticket sales office at (407) UCF-1000 or by visiting UCFAthletics.com. The Knights' complete schedule will be released soon.
