ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The Knights marked the official start of the 2013-14 campaign Friday with their first official preseason practice at CFE Arena. Head coach Donnie Jones' squad spent just under two hours practicing on their new "blacktop" court.
The Knights, who are entering their first campaign in the American Athletic Conference, focused on fundamentals during the practice session.
UCF returns four starters from last season's 20-victory team, led by seniors Calvin Newell, Tristan Spurlock and Isaiah Sykes. Friday's practice marked the first official college workouts for freshmen Brandon Goodwin, Steven Haney and Justin McBride, and the first UCF practice for junior-college transfer Eugene McCrory.
Jones was pleased with his team's effort and intensity during the practice.
"It is great to be back out for our first official practice and I thought our guys showed good enthusiasm, he said. "This is an exciting season ahead of us and we expect to use these practices to get better as a team every day."
UCF will open the regular season on Nov. 8, hosting Tampa at CFE Arena. On the Nov. 13, the Knights host Florida State. The squad will make its debut in The American on New Year's Eve against defending national champion Louisville at CFE Arena.
