MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UCFKnights.com) - As UCF men's basketball squad gets set to embark on its first campaign in one of the top leagues in the country, senior guard Isaiah Sykes was named to the American Athletic Conference preseason all-league second team Wednesday. The Detroit native was one of 11 players to receive all-conference accolades from The American's head coaches.
The conference also announced its preseason poll during its media day at FedExForum and the Knights, who return four of their top five scorers and won 20 contests a year ago under head coach Donnie Jones, were selected ninth.
Last season, Sykes earned All-Conference USA First Team and C-USA All-Defensive Team recognition after averaging 16.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.3 steals. He led the nation with two triple-doubles and scored in double figures 27 times and had 12 20-point performances.
Sykes totaled 72 steals, good for seventh on the UCF single-season register. In league play, became the first player in C-USA history to rank in the league top 10 in points (16.8/8th), rebounds (8.6/5th), assists (4.3/7th) and steals (2.3/1st).
Defending national champion Louisville was tabbed first in the preseason poll, followed by UConn, Memphis, Cincinnati and Temple. Russ Smith of Louisville was selected as the league's preseason player of the year and SMU's Keith Frazier took the rookie of the year honors.
Every conference squad will visit CFE Arena this season, starting with Louisville on New Year's Eve. UCF opens the campaign on Nov. 8 against Tampa and then hosts Florida State on Nov. 13.
