ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The Knights added a new face to the roster this season with 18-year-old point guard Brandon Goodwin. Named the Georgia AAAAAA Player of the Year, he led Norcross High School to the state title and a 27-6 mark before coming to UCF.
Goodwin has been learning from veterans Calvin Newell, Isaiah Sykes and others and adds depth to the Knights bench this year. "They push me... on and off the court," Goodwin said when asked about working with his new teammates. "They show me step-by-step and if I don't understand the coaches, they explain in better detail."
Goodwin scored 22 points and had seven rebounds in the state championship game win over Hillgrove and averaged 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.8 steals in his senior season. He was also named player of the year by the Gwinnett Daily Post and the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
As a Knight, Goodwin will face premier opponents this season in the American Athletic Conference including Louisville, Temple and UConn. These opponents present a new set of challenges for players such as Goodwin who are fresh out of high school. "The game speeds up a lot. It's a lot more physical now."
The Knights will open the 2013-14 season at the CFE Arena on Nov. 8 against Tampa at 8:30 p.m. As part of a three-game home opener UCF will also host Florida State on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in a nationally televised game on ESPNews.
