ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Three of the top prep players in Florida signed National Letters of Intent to join the UCF men's basketball program Wednesday, UCF head coach Donnie Jones announced. The impressive signing class consists of Rod Days (Weston/Sagemont), Wayne Martin (Jacksonville/Providence Christian) and Kasey Wilson (North Port/North Port).
The trio will join the Knights prior to the 2011-12 campaign. The group has been recognized by ESPN.com as one of the top-50 recruiting classes in the country. Jones is in his first year at the helm of the Knights.
"Our focus was to bring on the best players from the state of Florida that fit our needs," Jones said. "We targeted guys from day one that we thought could make an impact within our program. We feel like Rod, Wayne and Kasey all bring a unique diversity with their respective talents."
Days is a 6-foot-6 guard/forward who was a Florida Class 2A All-State Third Team selection as a junior. ESPN lists him as the 35th-best small forward in the country. Days averaged 16.0 points and 8.0 rebounds last year, and was a South Florida Sun-Sentinel All-Broward County Class 3A-2A-1A Second Team pick. Days had his best game of the season against Montverde Academy, the 10th-ranked team in the nation, scoring a career-high 28 points in the ESPNU Old Spice Showcase. He plays at Sagemont under coach Kevin Ross, and helped the Lions go 23-8 in 2009-10. On the AAU level, he starred for the Broward Bobcats.
"With his length and size at 6-foot-6, Rod reminds me of (former Florida star) Corey Brewer," Jones said. "He is a terrific athlete. He is a good shooter. Rod can play the two or the three and will be great in our press."
A 6-foot-7 forward, Martin helped Providence Christian go 31-1 last season and win the Florida Class 2A state championship. A Florida Class 2A All-State Third Team selection, he averaged 16.0 points, 9.0 boards and 3.0 blocks. Martin is ranked 30th among all power forwards in the country by ESPN. He plays at Providence for coach Jim Martin. Martin competed on the AAU level for the Memphis YOMCA.
"Wayne is a great athlete. He can really leap. Wayne can play multiple positions. He is a shot blocker who has a good skill level and brings great energy," Jones said.
Wilson is a 6-foot-7 forward who was a Florida Class 6A All-State Second Team selection as a junior. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune Player of the Year, he averaged 20.5 points, 11.3 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. Wilson, who is rated as the 44th-best power forward in the country by ESPN, led North Port to a 21-4 record a year ago. He plays at North Port for coach Curt Allen. On the AAU level, he starred for Florida Elite.
Jones and the Knights will open the 2010-11 campaign on Nov. 12, hosting West Florida. UCF will play a school-record 17 contests at the UCF Arena this year. Season tickets, which start at just $96 and include a free Knightmare t-shirt, are currently available by calling (407) UCF-1000 or by visiting UCFAthletics.com.
