October 15, 2005
UCF played its first-ever road game in Conference USA Saturday evening at Southern Miss. The Golden Knights (3-3, 2-1 C-USA) lost 52-31 to the Golden Eagles (3-2, 2-1 C-USA).
The loss snapped UCF's three-game winning streak and created a four-way tie for first place in C-USA's Eastern Division. UCF, East Carolina, Southern Miss and Marshall are all tied for first in the division at 2-1.
UCF had its first play reviewed as a member of Conference USA in the second quarter. The officials on the field ruled senior WR Brandon Marshall stepped out-of-bounds before catching a 48-yard touchdown pass from junior QB Steven Moffett. After review, the officials ruled that Marshall did step out-of-bounds and the original call on the field stood.
Turnovers were the story of the first half as the Golden Knights turned the ball over five times, leading to 29 points for Southern Miss. UCF trailed 45-7 at the half.
True freshman SS Breon Rogers made his first career start for the Golden Knights. He is the seventh true freshmen to start this season for UCF. Senior FS Anthony Willis was UCF's other first-time starter, giving UCF 44 players on its roster with at least one game of starting experience.
Steven Moffett has thrown for at least one touchdown in nine consecutive games. Moffett tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to junior WR Mike Walker for UCF's first score of the contest. He finished with a pair of touchdown passes on 15-24 passing for 152 yards with one interception.
Walker had his first two-touchdown game of his career. The Orlando native caught eight passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Walker recorded his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game for the Golden Knights. He has gone over the century mark in three of UCF's six games this season.
Senior DE Paul Carrington recorded his team-leading fourth sack of the season in the second quarter.
True freshman MLB Travis Barr recorded his first career interception in the third quarter. The Golden Knights have at least one interception in four consecutive games.
Sophomore QB Kyle Israel made his season debut for the Golden Knights in the fourth quarter. He scored his first career touchdown on a one-yard run. Israel carried the football four times for 24 yards on the 80-yard scoring drive. He led UCF to a field goal on his second drive. He later picked up his first career touchdown pass when he hit Darcy Johnson for a 15-yard scoring strike with five seconds remaining.
Senior place kicker Matt Prater scored seven points on a field goal and four PATs, moving him past Javier Beorlegui into fifth place on UCF's all-time scoring list. Prater has now scored 211 points.
