Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF head coach George O'Leary announced the addition of Gary Blackney to the Knights' football coaching staff on Wednesday. Blackney brings over 30 years of coaching experience to UCF where he will serve as the team's secondary coach.
"We are extremely happy to be adding Gary Blackney to our coaching staff," O'Leary said. "He brings with him a wealth of experience coaching in the secondary and will be a great addition to our program."
Blackney returns to the coaching ranks after a brief two-year stint away from the game. His previous coaching duties were at the University of Maryland from 2001-05 where he spent five years as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach for the Terrapins. The Terps ranked in the top 30 in scoring defense in four out of his five seasons at the school.
"I have contemplated getting back into coaching for over a year now, but it had to be the right situation," Blackney said. "There were certain criteria I was looking for to get me back into coaching and UCF met each of those. This is a great opportunity to work for a head coach like George O'Leary and I'm excited to get things started here."
Blackney brings head coaching experience as well to Orlando as he spent 10 years leading the Bowling Green State University teams from 1991-2000. At Bowling Green, Blackney won 60 games, including two bowl games, and led the Falcons to their first back-to-back 10-win seasons in school history (1991 and 1992).
Prior to his head coaching stint, Blackney spent 21 seasons as an assistant coach at a number of NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision schools, including a seven-year stint at The Ohio State University (1984-90). He has coached defensive backs at Brown (1970-72), Wisconsin (1975-76), UCLA (1978-79), Syracuse (1980-83) and Ohio State (1984).
Besides his coordinating duties at Maryland, Blackney also coordinated Wisconsin's defense in 1977 and Ohio State's from 1985-87.
Blackney and O'Leary coached together early in their respective careers as assistant coaches at Syracuse from 1980-83. Blackney replaces Earnest Collins on the UCF coaching staff. Collins accepted the defensive coordinator position at Alcorn State on Jan. 1.
