ORLANDO, Fla. ( - The College Football Performance Awards have begun releasing their preseason honors, and UCF senior safety Clayton Geathers has been selected to the CFPA Defensive Back Trophy Watch List.

Geathers was one of 42 FBS players to be on the defensive backs watch list. The goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.

Earlier in June, Geathers was placed on Phil Steele's Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team.

Dating back to 2011, Geathers has started all 39 games for the Knights at the strong safety position, earning a spot on the 2011 Conference USA All-Freshman Team as well as the 2013 All-American Athletic Conference Second Team.

After posting 67 tackles as a redshirt freshman, the South Carolina native had 117 as a sophomore and then 100 as a junior. He collected the first two interceptions of his career a year ago, and broke up 10 passes along the way for a combined 12 passes defended.

For his career, Geathers has 286 tackles. If he can post another season with an impressive tackle total, he will rank among the all-time greats at UCF (record is 443 by Rick Hamilton from 1989-92), including his former teammate in the secondary in free safety Kemal Ishmael who notched 368 tackles from 2009-12 to rank third in UCF history.
