ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF junior Storm Johnson was named a candidate for the Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday. The honor is handed out to the nation's premier running back.
The American Athletic Conference had three players selected as candidates: Johnson and Louisville's Dominique Brown and Senorise Perry.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists Nov. 14, and then the finalists Nov. 25. The recipient of the 2013 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12 on ESPN.
The Doak Walker Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.
A native of Loganville, Ga., Johnson will be aiming to serve as UCF's top running back in 2013. He transferred to the Knights from Miami and worked with the Black and Gold's scout team in 2011. As a redshirt sophomore last year, Johnson started five games and finished with 507 yards and four touchdowns. He had two contests in which he rushed for at least 90 yards, and posted 50 yards on just six carries in the Beef `O' Brady's Bowl.
Johnson spent 2012 behind Latavius Murray, who closed out his senior year with 1,106 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Now with Murray lacing up his cleats with the Oakland Raiders, Johnson will aim to become UCF's top back for 2013.
