ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF Knights (3-1, 0-0) will head into their first American Athletic Conference game against a team they’ve seen many times in the past, the Memphis Tigers (1-2, 0-0). The Knights hold the lead in the all-time series against the Tigers, 8-1.
This will be UCF’s third road game of the season. The Knights are undefeated on the road through those first two. This will be the second consecutive season that the team will travel to the Liberty Bowl to face the Tigers.
Despite the past success the Knights have had against Memphis, the players know this is a new season and they are facing a Tigers team with 17 returning starters.
“We prepare for each team just like every other team. Every team you need to respect,” said senior offensive lineman Justin McCray. “We just need to prepare and try and come out with a W.”
“They have some guys that can take it the distance,” said redshirt junior defensive back Clayton Geathers. “They’ve got good speed and they have good athletes. You just can’t sleep on them. I feel that they’re a good team and we’re going to have to come out and play.”
UCF head coach George O’Leary says the team is just focused on winning the first ever American Athletic Conference Championship.
“I remind them about what our goal is and the only goal on the team is to win the conference championship,” said O’Leary. “I’m glad it’s a conference game and they’re mindset is on Memphis right now and I doubt they’ll talk about the last game. They’re into the Memphis game and what they need to do to win that game.”
