ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF junior Shawn Moffitt was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Monday. He was one of only 20 kickers in the country who were honored.
Semifinalists will be voted on by FBS head coaches, sports information offices, past Groza finalists and national and regional football writers to select the three finalists. These finalists will be announced Nov. 25 and honored at the 22nd annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards Banquet Dec. 10 in West Palm Beach, Fla. The winner will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show Dec. 12.
The award is named in honor of one of the all-time great kickers in football history, Lou Groza. Groza played 21 seasons for the Cleveland Browns setting numerous franchise records, including most games played, most points scored and an amazing 107 consecutive games in which he scored a point. Groza was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974.
A product of Dr. Phillips in Orlando, Moffitt stands a perfect 9-for-9 in field goals this season and is one of nine kickers in the country who are booting at 100% and have attempted at least five field goals. Since 2012, Moffitt has converted 10 straight tries, which is tied for the fourth longest streak in UCF history (record is 16). He also had a string of nine consecutive conversions from 2011-12.
Moffitt stands 3-for-3 from 20-29 yards, 5-for-5 from 30-39 and 1-1 in attempts from at least 50 yards out, highlighted by a career-long 50-yards against UConn. He also had huge conversions against Penn State (2-for-2) and Louisville (1-for-1), contests UCF won by three points.
Moffitt is 24-for-32 for his career, good for a .750 career field-goal percentage and third on the UCF all-time list.
In 2013, Moffitt also stands 28-for-28 in extra-point attempts, and ranks second on the team in scoring behind only Storm Johnson (72 points) with 55 points.
Moffitt and the Knights are 6-1 this season and 3-0 in the American Athletic Conference, and are also ranked No. 19 in the Associated Press Top 25, No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 21 in the BCS standings. The Black and Gold returns from their bye week to host Houston Saturday at 7 p.m. for Homecoming and Military Appreciation Day, and the Cougars also are undefeated in The American at 4-0 (7-1 overall).
