ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - A preferred walk-on from Orlando's Evans High School, UCF free safety Brandon Alexander picked up the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award Monday. The junior helped No. 15/19 UCF deliver a 19-14 victory over Houston in a battle for first place Nov. 9 at Bright House Networks Stadium.

Alexander collected seven tackles, two break-ups and an interception against Houston. At the end of the first half, Alexander broke up a second-down pass, which eventually led to a fourth-down sack to keep the Cougars off the board. With Houston driving to start the second half, he grabbed a tipped ball as he danced on the sideline to stay in bounds on the UCF-32 for his first interception of the season.
And on the Cougars' last play with less than 20 seconds remaining from the UCF-7, Alexander was credited with breaking up the potential game-winning touchdown pass by John O'Korn, giving the Knights the win and moving to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in The American.
Alexander has 39 tackles with 3.0 tackles for loss, one sack, three break-ups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery this season. He first played cornerback for the Knights as a freshman and sophomore before switching to free safety for 2013.
The American also tagged freshman running back William Stanback to the league's Honor Roll. The New York native averaged 8.2 yards per carry vs. the Cougars, finishing with nine attempts for 74 yards and scored UCF's two touchdowns. His first score came on a 15-yard burst with 2:25 left in the third quarter which gave the Knights a 13-7 lead. Stanback's second touchdown on the ground was a 38-yard run to cap off a 98-yard drive with 10:34 remaining in the fourth, boosting UCF's lead to 19-7.
