ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF free safety Brandon Alexander not only received the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award Monday, on Tuesday he also became one of 53 national nominees for the Burlsworth Trophy which is handed out to the most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on.
A walk-on is defined as a player who began his first season of participation with an FBS program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department. Alexander is one of three players from a school in the Sunshine State to serve as a nominee (FAU RB Jonathan Wallace and USF PK Marvin Kloss).

Without a lot of attention coming out of Evans High School in Orlando, Alexander took advantage of his opportunities as a true freshman in 2011. At cornerback, he worked his way from the scout team to starting five games, registering 43 tackles and five break-ups. A year later, Alexander made 12 starts and posted 62 tackles with nine break-ups and his first collegiate interception.
As a junior in 2013, Alexander switched to free safety and has not stepped on the brakes. He boasts 39 tackles while starting all eight games, and has 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack to his credit. Along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, he has three break-ups and pulled in a highlight-reel interception in the win over Houston. In that game against the Cougars Nov. 9, he deflected UH's final pass of the game in the endzone to secure UCF's 19-14 victory.
Alexander and the No. 15/19 Knights (7-1, 4-0) are currently preparing for a showdown at Temple Saturday at noon on ESPN Regional (CW18 in Orlando). They will return home for a nationally-televised ESPN Thursday-night clash with Rutgers Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Bright House Networks Stadium.
