ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – With three games remaining in the season, the No. 17/20 UCF Knights (8-1, 5-0) are getting ready to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-4, 2-3) for the first time in school history as a conference opponent. The last time these two teams faced each other was in the 2009 St. Petersburg Bowl, which RU defeated the Knights 45-24.
UCF enters this contest on a five-game winning streak and will play in its fourth nationally televised game of the year. This is also the Knights’ first Thursday night appearance on ESPN since 2005 at South Carolina.
On offense, the team complied a total of 657 yards against the Temple Owls – which is the third most total yards in a single game in UCF history. Junior quarterback Blake Bortles is coming off a career-high 403 passing yards and four touchdowns in that contest in Philadelphia. Junior receiver J.J. Worton is the reigning American Athletic Conference offensive player of the week for his ten catch 179 yard performance against the Owls, which included an amazing one-handed touchdown grab to tie the game with only 1:06 left to play.
On the defensive side, UCF is currently ranked third in the conference in scoring defense giving up a total of 20.6 points per game. The Knights turnover margin continues to be one of the best in the conference. The team is ranked third with a plus-9 margin and 21 total turnovers on the season.
Thursday night’s game is also a “Gold Rush”, where fans wear gold and students wear black.
