ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Ten years ago, George O’Leary accepted the UCF head coaching job. From that day forward, he began building the foundation of a championship program and on that exact same day ten years later he accepted the school’s first-ever invitation to a BCS Bowl game to face the No. 6 Baylor Bears in the 2014 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
“I think it’s great for UCF,” said Coach O’Leary. “A lot of hard work went into the program from a lot of people. I think it’s great for the fan base. They’ve been fans for so long and now they’re getting some rewards they’ve been looking for.”
Coach O’Leary and the Knights have always been focused on winning conference championships every season. This year was UCF’s first year in the new American Athletic Conference, which awarded the winner of the conference an automatic BCS Bowl bid.
“Getting to a BCS Bowl in the coaching world is probably the ultimate as far as what you can do with your season,” said Coach O’Leary. “It’s a great tribute to go to the game and we’ll represent the American [Athletic] Conference to the best of our ability and I’m sure UCF will too as far as competing and doing the best we can do.”
Once they players complete their finals they will be on a break and will have to report back to campus for practice and bowl preparation on December 17th. They will have practice until that Sunday. Then the team will have another short break to spend the holidays with their family and will leave for Arizona the day after Christmas.
The trip to Glendale, Arizona is more than 2,000 miles and is the longest trip the Knights will make this season, but Coach O’Leary says he knows this game will be a great showing for his team and UCF nation.
“Knowing the fan base and just the talk I hear we’ll have a great contingent out there representing UCF and the fan base,” said O’Leary.
