SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (UCFKnights.com) - The best defense is a good offense. That age-old adage was a primary theme when UCF offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe, quarterback Blake Bortles, running back Storm Johnson and linemen Jordan McCray and Justin McCray met with the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl media contingent Saturday morning at the Camelback Inn.
Baylor's quick-strike offense leads the nation in scoring and total yardage. Numerous questions from the press conference centered around ball control and time of possession.
"We've been that kind of team, philosophically," Taaffe said. "Coach O'Leary keeps a statistic ... when we win the time of possession, our winning statistic is good. But we have to make first downs. Whether we control the possession time or not, obviously we have to stay on the field and score points. But (Baylor is) a prolific offensive football team, and we have to certainly do our part to help out."
Johnson said there is no added emphasis regarding ball control for this game.
"I wouldn't say 'pressure' (to remain on the field)," Johnson said. "I would say we need to do our jobs, bring our A game, not have any lapses. I feel like our team is going to be ready to play. Our coaches will be sure of that."
Taaffe is thankful he has personnel that often allows the Knights to accomplish their offensive goals.
"We feel we have pretty good speed at wide receiver," Taaffe said. "Blake has really blossomed this year in his second year as a starter at quarterback. We have an outstanding running back in Storm Johnson, and William Stanback, who has played a lot of football this year. We try to spread it around."
While the UCF offense has plenty of talent, Taaffe said he knows his unit has its work cut out for it on New Year's Night.
"His scheme is pretty much the same as it's been," Taaffe said of Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett. "They've obviously recruited well. They have very good team speed. They do a lot of line movements, which their style, a little different than some of the teams we've seen. I know their offense gets all the attention, being as prolific as Baylor has been, but I think they're a very good defensive football team. I've known Phil for a long time. He does a good job."
