Eason Leads Knights to Strong Start at Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. (UCFAthletics.com) – Paced by junior Greg Eason, the UCF men’s golf team is tied for fourth place after the first round of the NCAA Tempe Regional. The tournament got under way Thursday at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course.

Eason fired a 5-under round of 65 on the par-70 course Thursday. That total included four birdies on the front nine, with a pair of birdies sandwiched around a bogey on the back nine. Dustin Korte of Austin Peay State and Pontus Widegren of UCLA each shot -6 to tie for the first-round lead, with Eason just one stroke back.

Ricardo Gouveia also put together a solid round Thursday. Gouveia was 2-under and is tied for sixth place after the first round. He picked up two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and recorded a pair of birdies on the back.

Kyle Wilshire was 1-over for the first round, firing a 71 to tie for 28th. Jose Joia rounded out UCF’s first-round scoring with a +6 score of 76, tying him for 64th. Michael Visacki is 72nd after the first round, carding a 78 (+8).

UCLA leads the team standings at -12, while there is a logjam of teams within two strokes of each other for the next seven slots. Duke is second at -2, while Austin Peay is third at -1. Georgia, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Clemson and UCF are all tied for fourth at even par.

UCF will be amongst the first on the course for Friday’s second round, teeing off at 7 a.m. PT.
