ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Seniors Greg Eason and Ricardo Gouveia are each in the Top 10 at the NCAA San Antonio Regional after the second round of play. While that UCF duo was solid on the Briggs Ranch Golf Club course Friday, the No. 7-ranked Knights have some work to do as a team in Saturday's third and final round.
UCF dropped back to ninth place, after posting a team score of 6-over Friday. With the top five teams in the region advancing to the NCAA Championship, the Knights are currently four strokes off the pace of UCLA, TCU and Georgia Southern. Those three teams are all tied for fifth at 2-over for the tournament.
Eason was on fire most of the day. He entered the second round tied for 34th after a 2-over 74 in the first round. He opened with a bogey Friday, but ripped off three birdies on the front nine. He followed that up with a birdie and an eagle on 12 and 13 to move to 5-under for the day. A bogey on 15 didn't stop the positive momentum, as he finished strong with birdies on 16 and 17. Eason's 6-under 66 was tied for the best score on day two of the tournament. He is 4-under overall and tied for fifth place.
Gouveia was Mr. Consistency in the second round. He did not record a bogey and picked up birdies on 7 and 11 to finish the day at 2-under. For the tournament, Gouveia is 3-under and sits in a tie for eighth place.
Linus Vaisanen and Federico Zucchetti both had rough outings on day two. Vaisanen was 6-over for the day, while Zucchetti was 8-over, rounding out the scoring for UCF. Kyle Wilshire was tied for third place after the first round, when he posted a 4-under 68. But he struggled Friday, posting a 9-over 81.
On Saturday, the Knights will look to pull off a comeback and qualify for a third straight NCAA Championship berth. UCF tees off in the first group at 7:30 a.m. CT. Follow live scoring here.
