ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The No. 6-ranked UCF men’s golf team bolstered its roster for the future Tuesday. West Virginia native Thadd Obecny and Juuso Kahlos of Finland have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the program for the 2014-15 season.
Obecny is rated the No. 22 junior player in the nation and is the 10th-rated player in the 2014 recruiting class, according to Golfweek. Junior Golf Scoreboard ranks Obecny as No. 44 among all junior players and No. 24 in this year’s recruiting class.
Obecny has a great deal of success on the junior circuit for the past two years. He finished ninth at both the 2013 Western Junior Championship and the 2013 Scott Robertson Memorial. Obecny put together a 16th-place finish at the 2013 AJGA Junior Players Championship and finished 22nd at the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur. In 2012, he won the West Virginia Junior Match Play title. Also in 2012, Obecny took fourth at the Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier, seventh at the West Virginia Amateur, eighth at the Webb Simpson Junior, 10th at the Scott Robertson Memorial and 15th at the Junior Jones Cup.
“Watching Thadd throughout the recruiting process, we saw a guy who was a great competitor,” UCF head coach Bryce Wallor said. “He looked like he really, really enjoyed the game. It looked like he enjoyed the good days and the bad days in the game, which was fun to see. We’re excited about him. We think he’s a real talent. Academically, he’s a strong student. We think he’s going to be a great fit here.”
Kahlos is ranked No. 151 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He has played almost exclusively in Finland and has been very successful there.
Kahlos took runner-up honors at the 2013 Finnish Tour Kamppi Open, the 2013 Finnish Stroke Play Championship and the 2013 Finnish Tour 3 event. He was fourth at the Finnish Tour Finaali, the 2013 Finnish International Under 21 event and at the 2013 International Brabants Open. Kahlos finished in sixth place at the 2013 Finnish Amateur and was also ninth at the 2012 Teho Sport Finnish Open.
“Juuso will be our second Finnish player to be here,” Wallor said, referencing current Knight Linus Vaisanen. “With his World Amateur Ranking, he’s a proven player. He has played mostly in his home country. He hasn’t traveled to the U.S. to play in any competitions. We got a guy with a great personality. He’s very excited to come to the U.S. and compete in our system. We think over four years, he’ll make a big difference in our success.”
The Knights are currently in between the fall and spring portions of their 2013-14 schedule. The season resumes for UCF at the Gator Invitational Feb. 15-16 in Gainesville, Fla.
