MIAMI, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF senior Greg Eason overcame one of the strongest amateur fields in the world to become the 2013 South Beach International Amateur Champion Sunday at Miami Beach Golf Club.
Eason carded a final-round 69 for two-stroke victory over Bailey Patrick of Charlotte, N.C. Eason ended the tournament at 5-under par (208) and moves from 42nd to 22nd in the world ranking with this major win. Eason was one stroke back entering Sunday's final round in the four-round event. He was even par after the first round, which was played at Normandy Shores Golf Club. In the final three rounds at Miami Beach Golf Club, he turned in scores of 69, 70 and 69.
Patrick, who plays his college golf at North Carolina carded a 3-under 68 to end up in sole position of second place at 3-under (280). Virginia Tech’s Bryce Chalkley University of New Mexico golfer Victor Perez tied for third at 1-under.
The South Beach International Amateur featured 204 of the top players in the world, including 53 of the top 600 worldwide amateurs. Twenty-four countries were represented by 95 international players, ranking the South Beach International second only to the British Amateur in international participation worldwide.
Eason and his Knights teammates will resume the 2013-14 season on Feb. 15-16, when they travel to Gainesville, Fla. for the Gator Invitational. UCF will enter the spring portion of its season ranked No. 6 in the nation.
