ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior forward Romario Williams tallied a natural hat trick in the Knights 3-0 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday evening at the UCF Soccer Complex. Three 30-minute periods were played in the first of two exhibition matches for UCF.
Freshman midfielder Matias Pyysalo, who had a pair of assists, intercepted an attempted clear on the left side and laid a perfect pass to Williams. He took one touch before striking a shot far post that eluded the goalie at 5:26 of the first.
Just prior to the goal, freshman Walker Dawkins setup junior forward Hadji Barry with an opportunity from the right side, which was stopped by the Dolphins' keeper.
Williams applied pressure directly after the kickoff and created a turnover deep in the opponent's territory. He dribbled past one defender on the right side before sliding a shot past the keeper, 2-0, at 5:36 of the first.
The Knights continued controlling the play in the first frame and notched another golden opportunity when Barry sent a through ball inside the 18-yard box. A one-time strike by Pyysalo was blocked away by the keeper.
Netting the hat trick was Williams at 6:39 of the second on a shot under the diving goalkeeper.
Besides a flurry of action for the Dolphins late in the second stanza, the Knights' defense denied Jacksonville chances throughout the contest, allowing just five shots and only one on net.
Senior goalkeeper Sebastian Evers made just one save in the first two frames. Combining for the shutout was sophomore Zach Biggs, who played the final 30 minutes.
UCF presented by Napleton's Volkswagen finished with 11 shots, which included three during the third period.
The Knights welcome Tampa on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex. Admission to the home exhibition contest is free.
