ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF wrapped up its exhibition season on Wednesday night with a 7-0 victory over Tampa at the UCF Soccer Complex. Junior forward Romario Williams and freshman forward Matheus Mera each registered a pair of goals against the Spartans.
The Knights tallied 18 shots, nine in each half, during the contest. Senior Jake Weiss found the back of the net on a long cross from the left, while freshmen Walker Dawkins and Matias Pyysalo registered their first collegiate goals along with Mera.
Williams opened the scoring for the Knights on a tremendous feed by Pyysalo. The Portmore, Jamaica, native one-timed the pass from the center of the box at 8:43.
Returning the favor at 11:03 of the first was Williams with a lead pass that enabled Pyysalo to dribble around a defender and the goalkeeper before finding the back of the net.
The goal by Weiss with 16:36 left in the first was the final marker for the Knights in the half.
Executing a textbook give-and-go inside the 18-yard box was Dawkins and junior Hadji Barry, who provided a perfect pass back to the Royal Palm Beach, Fla., native for the fourth goal at 46:50.
Off a direct kick just outside the 18-yard box, Williams tallied his fifth goal in two exhibition matches on a ball the curved around the keeper into the net with 56:51.
With the 5-0 lead, a number of the starters came off the field, but the team continued working in unison and applied pressure on the Spartans. A cross from freshman Drew Bailey at 68:49 placed Mera in perfect position for a header that was directed down and past the keeper.
During the 10-second countdown to the final horn, Mera went on a breakaway and chipped a shot over the jumping keeper for the final marker at 89:59. The goal finished off a tremendous preseason for the Knights.
The Knights' defense kept clean sheets during the pair of exhibition contests.
Senior goalkeeper Sebastian Evers recorded three saves against Tampa before sophomore Zach Biggs finished the match with a pair of stops.
UCF presented by Napleton's Volkswagen opens the 2014 campaign on Aug. 29 at Portland with the kickoff set for 10 p.m. Eastern. The Knights battle at Oregon State on Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. Eastern with the contest being broadcasted on the PAC-12 Network.
