ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF men's soccer team scored a pair of late goals Thursday to post its first victory of 2013, 2-1, over FIU at the UCF Soccer Complex. Fernando Laverde tallied a goal in the 70th minute and then Romario Williams notched the gamewinner in the 76th minute on a penalty kick.

UCF improved to 1-0-1 following the win. The Knights trailed for most of the contest after the Panthers (1-2-0) went ahead early when Roberto Alterio slipped past a pair of defenders and scored in the second minute.

Laverde scored on a free kick from 25 yards out and moments later, Williams, who had ample scoring opportunities all evening, beat Lawrence Craggs on a penalty kick.

"We knew that FIU would be firing on all cylinders at the start of the game," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "Unfortunately, that caught us off guard, which should never happen, and you are chasing the game. I give a lot of credit to the players for battling back."

The teams, who were rivals in Conference USA the last few years, combined for 36 fouls, with FIU being whistled for 24. Four Panthers were issued yellow cards.

UCF had two scoring opportunities in the opening half, including a free kick from Williams that was deflected before Craggs made a diving stop.

The Knights recorded 11 shots, compared to eight for FIU. Both Williams and Laverde also had great scoring looks midway through the second half, with Williams getting a nice feed from Abdi Yusuf in the box, but his shot was blocked.

The Knights were playing the second of three-straight matches at home to open the year. UCF will return to action Sunday, hosting North Florida at 7 p.m.
