BOCA RATON - Sophomore tri-captain Alejandro Gessen scored on a penalty kick in the 94th minute to give UCF a 1-0 overtime victory over Atlantic Sun rival Florida Atlantic in men's soccer action on Friday night.

With the win, the Golden Knights (3-3-2, 2-0 A-Sun) extend their unbeaten streak this season to four games, while they also improved their current winning streak over the Owls (4-2, 1-1 A-Sun) to four.

The match was hard fought from kickoff as the two squads combined for 34 fouls and four cautions. In the 28th minute, junior Jon Imran earned a penalty kick that was stopped by FAU keeper Anders Granstad. UCF outshot the hosts by a 9-4 margin in the first half with four of those on target.

The Knights had a 7-1 advantage in shots in the second half and held a 10-2 margin in corner kicks on the evening. With five minutes remaining in scoreless regulation, Gessen directed a header toward the goal off a corner kick served by freshman Islam Rashwan, but Granstad made the save.

FAU also had an opportunity to win the game on shot by 2003 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Kristoffer Aarskog with that was saved by the UCF defense.

Just over six minutes into the first overtime, Gessen capitalized on his opportunity scoring his first goal of the season on a penalty kick.

UCF finished with a 17-5 advantage in shots. Granstad stopped seven shots, while Knights' keeper Ryan McIntosh had two.

The Golden Knights return home on Oct. 14 to host Lipscomb for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
