ORLANDO - Florida International (10-5-0) used three first period goals to earn a 3-0 victory over UCF in men's soccer action on Sunday at the UCF Soccer Complex. The win spoiled the Golden Knights (8-6-2) regular season finale and senior day celebrations.
The Golden Bears scored on their first three shots on goal. With under 25 minutes played in the match, FIU scored two goals within a minute and a half to put the hosts down early. Bobby Boswell took a pass from Carron Williams and scored in the lower left corner at 23:33 for the 1-0 lead before Williams scored his own goal with an assist to Fernando Plentz at 24:08.
Lucas Scudeler increased the Golden Panthers advantage to 3-0 on an unassisted tally at 36:37.
UCF's only shot in the first half came off a header by freshman Phillip Michael Hall, but it went high over the crossbar. The Golden Knights counted their first shot on goal off the foot of redshirt freshman Adham Rashwan with 13:30 left in regulation. Senior Xavier Delgado also took two shots in the box at close range that were stopped by FIU keeper Shawn Crowe (three saves) as time ticked off the clock.
The Golden Bears finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots and UCF keeper Ryan McIntosh made one save on the afternoon.
After a bye in the first round, the No. 1 seeded Golden Knights face the winner of the No. 4 Georgia State/No. 5 Belmont match in the Atlantic Sun Tournament semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
