ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Two home tournaments highlight the slate as UCF head men's soccer coach Bryan Cunningham announced his team's 2009 fall schedule on Tuesday. The Knights will play 16 regular-season contests, including nine on their home pitch.
"We're thrilled to have a very solid home schedule this season," said Cunningham, who is entering his third year at the helm of the Knights' program. "The non-conference games will definitely compliment our tough Conference USA schedule. And we play three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago in Jacksonville, South Florida and Tulsa so we will be tested often."
UCF's opener comes on the road on Sept. 1 when it travels to Tampa to face in-state rival USF. A season ago, the Knights took 12th-ranked USF to overtime before falling 1-0.
The home opener will be part of the first UCF Fall Classic on Sept. 4. In the second game, UCF hosts UNF at 8:30 p.m., following an Iona-Georgia Southern tilt at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 6, UCF will play Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m.
After a road game at Jacksonville on Sept. 12, the Knights will follow with the second UCF Fall Classic from Sept. 18-20. On Sept. 18, UCF will play Houston Baptist at 7:30 p.m. following FAU against Manhattan at 5 p.m. The Knights then host Manhattan on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m.
The Conference USA opener will be on the road at Memphis on Sept. 26. The C-USA home opener is slated for Oct. 4 against South Carolina. The Knights will take a break from conference play to host Mercer on Oct. 13.
The final three conference home games are alternated with road trips to UAB and SMU. UCF hosts Marshall Oct. 18, a match that is tentatively scheduled to be aired on tape-delay by CBS College Sports, and Kentucky on Oct. 28 before ending the regular season against Tulsa, the 2008 C-USA champions, on Nov. 7.
The top four teams in the conference will vie for the C-USA tournament title which will be hosted by the top seed from Nov. 13-15.
In 2008, UCF finished the season 7-11-1 and 3-4-1 in C-USA play to finish in a tie for third in the league standings. The Knights defeated Memphis 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the C-USA tournament, the program's first tournament victory since joining the league.
In preparation for the season, UCF will host three exhibitions in August. The Knights welcome Rollins on Aug. 16, St. Leo on Aug. 18 and Tampa on Aug. 23.
