ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - In its season opener on Friday at home against FAU, the Knights had numerous scoring opportunities, but could not finish, leading to a scoreless draw against the Owls. On Thursday, when UCF returns to action against visiting FIU, the Knights will be aiming to put points on the board and record its first win of 2013.
Kickoff at the UCF Soccer Complex is 7 p.m. Season tickets, which include a savings off of the single-game ticket price, are $30 and include a commemorative UCF soccer scarf. Season tickets are still available by visiting UCFKnights.com or by calling (407) UCF-1000. The Gold Pass, which includes season tickets to all volleyball, men's and women's soccer, women's basketball, soccer and track & field contests, is also available now.
Against FAU, UCF finished with a 17-5 shot advantage and limited the Owls to only one shot on goal. Romario Williams and Omar Vallejo each had several scoring chances, including a great look by Vallejo inside the box near the end of the second overtime period.
Five freshmen, including four starters, made their college debuts against FAU and head coach Bryan Cunningham hopes that his young squad shows more patience against the Panthers Thursday.
"With a young group, there are going to be some jitters in that first game. I was pleased that we were able to get the clean sheet and I anticipate us finishing some of those chances as we move forward," Cunningham said.
FIU is 1-1 after splitting a pair of matches in California last weekend. The Panthers topped host San Diego State, 5-3, Sunday after falling 2-1 at Loyola-Marymount Friday.
UCF and the Panthers competed in the past as league foes in Conference USA. FIU remains in C-USA, but the Knights have moved to the American Athletic Conference. UCF is unbeaten in its last three contests against FIU.
The match against the Panthers is the second of three straight at home to open the campaign for the Knights, who host North Florida Saturday.
