ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 3 UCF men's soccer team will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9, when the Knights host No. 6 Memphis in the opening round of the 2013 American Athletic Conference Championship. The match will take place at 2:30 p.m. at UCF Soccer Complex prior to the UCF football game vs. Houston at 7 p.m., and admission will be free.
"We are excited to be hosting Memphis, a familiar opponent for us with a great team and staff," Knights' head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "We have had some great battles with them the last few years, and I anticipate this will be another one!"
UCF owns a 3-2 record in its last five regular-season meetings with Memphis, most recently handling the Tigers with a 1-0 victory on Oct. 9. The Knights defeated the Tigers in their last postseason matchup with a 4-3 overtime victory in the 2011 Conference USA quarters.
The Knights, who have not seen a loss since late September, are riding an eight-match unbeaten streak heading into the conference tournament at 7-4-5 overall and 4-1-3 in league play.
Offensively, UCF is led by sophomore Romario Williams. The forward leads the conference in scoring and found the back of the net nine times in nine regular-season matches.
The Tigers, who completed their regular season on Oct. 26 with a 2-1 home loss to No. 1 Louisville, enter the contest ranked No. 6 in the Midwest region according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings. Memphis is 9-7-1 overall and 3-5 in The American.
Both teams will be playing for a spot in the American's inaugural conference championship during Saturday's quarterfinal match. The winner will face either No. 7 SMU (3-11-2, 2-4-2 American) or No. 2 UConn (9-2-5, 4-0-5 American) in the semifinals on Nov. 15 at 8:30 p.m.
The ESPN3-televised championship match is set for Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. in Frisco, Texas.
