ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Following his team's solid performance at its opening event of the fall this past weekend, head coach Bobby Cashman was buzzing about how his freshmen competed in their first college tournament.
UCF was one of 28 teams that participated in the Southern Intercollegiates in Athens, Ga., and squad members won a total of 10 singles matches. Four freshmen played for the Knights and the rookies combined for six of the singles victories and two doubles triumphs.
"That shows that our team has some great depth," Cashman said. "The freshmen aren't afraid to compete. They are hungry and driven to get better."
In the Division II Singles bracket, both Chris Barrus and Inaki Espindola advanced to the round of 16. Barrus also joined Reece Acree to move on to the Division II Doubles bracket quarterfinals.
The tournament in Georgia was the first of five this fall for the Knights. UCF will return to action on Sept. 26 at the Bedford Cup in Tallahassee.
