Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak to Four Games

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Celeste Hudson and Francine Houston led UCF with 17 points apeice as the Golden Knights defeated Gardner-Webb 69-65. The Black and Gold improved to 7-6 on the season and 5-1 in the Atlantic Sun while Gardner-Webb fell to 5-8 on the season and 3-4 in the A-Sun.

Hudson was 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-8 from the three point line while Houston was 6-for-14 from the field, 2-for-7 from behind the arc and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. Keunta Miles led the team in rebounds with five.

Along with Hudson and Houston, there were two other Golden Knights in double-digits, Ali Roberts with 15 and Takira Allen with 11.

UCF and Gardner-Webb went into halftime with the score tied at 27. Roberts led UCF in the first half with 12 points while shooting 5-7 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. Miles led the Knights in rebounds with four. Hudson led the team in steals with three while netting six points and grabbing two boards.

Hudson opened the game with a three-pointer to kick-off 19-5 run by UCF in the first 10 minutes putting the Knights up by 14 points, their largest lead of the evening. Gardner-Webb fought back to take the lead with 1:22 to go in the first half putting the Bulldogs up 27-25. Gardner-Webb out scored UCF 22-8 in the final 10 minutes of the half bringing the score to 27 apeice.

In the first half of action for Gardner-Webb, Sequenta Blackman netted 17 points while going 6-9 from the field, 4-6 from behind the arc and 1-2 from the charity stripe.

 

 

Hudson hit another three to open the second half of action between the Knights and Bulldogs. The teams went back and forth during the first six minutes of play tying the score four times before UCF took the lead with 13:43 left to play and never looked back.

The Golden Knights went up by as many as 12 in the second half after going on a 21-8 run after taking the lead. The Bulldogs fought back to within three after going on a 16-7 run of their own. Houston made a free throw with 12 seconds left to play to put UCF up 69-65.

Blackman scored a total of 25 points for Gardner-Webb by shooting 8-for-13 from the field, 5-for-7 from the three-point line and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Shameka Smith led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 rebounds.

The Knights return home to take on the Mercer Bears on Thursday, January 20 at 5:00 p.m. in game one of a double header with the men's basketball team who will play Florida Atlantic at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for both games.
