Ali Roberts had 17 points as UCF defeated Mercer, 64-59. The Golden Knights improve to 15-7 on the season and 13-2 in the Atlantic Sun, while the Bears fell to 9-13 on the season and 7-8 in conference action.
Roberts was 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-3 from the three-point line. Takira Allen was second on the team in points with 14. Celeste Hudson led the Golden Knights in rebounds with eight, while Lashaunda Slade led the squad in assists with six. Roberts also led the team in blocks with three.
In the first 20 minutes of action, Roberts opened the scoring with a jumper just over a minute in. Mercer responded with a three-pointer from Jessica Miller only to have Weber answer that with a jumper of her own to put UCF up by one.
Mercer then went on a 12-5 run to put the Bears up, 16-9. The Golden Knights began to chip away at Mercer's lead and outscored them 8-0 to take over the lead with 9:10 to go in the half. The score went back and forth between the two teams the next five minutes before the Bears took control.
The half ended with Mercer up, 34-27. Roberts, Claudia Johnson and Takira Allen were leading the Black and Gold in points with six apiece. Allen was also leading the team in rebounds with five boards, while Roberts led the squad in blocks with two.
UCF opened the second half with a 14-4 run in the first five minutes with Roberts scoring eight of the 14 for the Golden Knights. The lead went back and forth between the two teams throughout the entire second half. Neither team had a lead greater than four until the end with UCF winning by five.
Miller and Rosanna Davis led Mercer with 16 points apiece, while Tanya Kessenich had 10. Miller also led the Bears in rebounds (9) and steals (4). Miller and Kessenich both led the team in blocks with three.
UCF returns home on Thursday, February 17 when they host Gardner-Webb in game one of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team, who will take on Mercer at 7:30. Tickets for both games are still available.
