PISCATAWAY, N.J. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF women's basketball team tripped up on its first trip to The RAC, losing a 90-50 decision to Rutgers on Saturday.
Turnovers proved especially costly for the Knights (10-15, 3-11) as the Scarlet Knights (20-5, 11-3) capitalized with 38 points off UCF's 22 miscues.
Freshman Zykira Lewis put together her fourth-straight game of double figures with 16 points to lead the Knights in scoring for the seventh time this year.
Neither team gained much of an edge for the first 10 minutes. With the score tied at 13, Rutgers' Rachel Hollivay and Kahleah Copper chipped in two quick buckets to ignite a 13-3 run for the Scarlet Knights.
UCF had trouble containing reigning American Freshman of the Week Tyler Scaife, who sank 6-of-12 from the field in the first half, including the last bucket to send her team into halftime holding a 39-26 advantage. She finished the game as one of four Scarlet Knights in double figures with 22 points.
After both teams failed to hit a 3-pointer in the first half, Rutgers guard Syessence Davis swished a trey from the left wing out of the break. UCF center Yanique Gordon responded with a fastbreak layup on UCF's next possession, but the Knights had to wait more than four minutes for their next score to come from a Lewis mid-range jumper.
Meanwhile, the Scarlet Knights rolled on a 14-0 stretch and rode the momentum they gained the rest of the way to a victory.
UCF continues its travels to Connecticut for an ESPN3 broadcast matchup with the No. 1 Huskies on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
