Takira Allen led UCF with her seventh career double-double as the Golden Knights defeated Gardner-Webb, 64-57, in Atlantic Sun action Thursday night. With the win, the Black and Gold improved to 16-7 on the season and 14-2 in the A-Sun, while the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 7-15 on the season and 5-10 in the league.
Allen had a season-high 20 points with 10 rebounds, while Ali Roberts had 14 points. Roberts topped the team in steals with seven, while Lashaunda Slade paced the Knights with five assists.
Celeste Hudson opened the game with a three-pointer 15 seconds in. Gardner-Webb responded with a jumper by Shameka Smith less than a minute later. The Runnin' Bulldogs took over the lead at the 17 minute mark after Sequenta Blackman hit two free throws.
The lead went back and forth between the Knights and Bulldogs the next six minutes until UCF took over and never looked back. The Black and Gold built a 12-point lead to end the half up 32-20. During the time UCF was building the 12-point lead, the Knights outscored the Bulldogs 22-10 with Allen scoring 14 during the drive.
At the end of the first half, Allen had 14 points for UCF, while Roberts was a distant second with six. Hudson and Allen were leading the team in rebounds with six apiece, while Roberts had three blocks.
The second half started with Smith hitting a free throw for Gardner-Webb to bring the Bulldogs to within 11 of the Knights. Roberts responded with two free throws of her own. UCF then went on a 14-8 run putting the Knights up by 19, their largest lead of the evening. Roberts paced the Black and Gold with four points during the run.
Gardner-Webb fought back to within five just under 10 minutes to go in the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs outscored UCF 16-2 in less than five minutes to make the score 50-45. UCF's lead was never more than 11 in the last six minutes of the game. The Bulldogs pulled to within three with one minute to go and started to foul UCF. Hudson hit 6-of-6 free throws in the last 17 seconds to give UCF the win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were led by Smith who recorded a double-double of her own after netting 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Brittany Harmon and Blackman were second on the team in points with 12 apiece. Jasmin Morris led Gardner-Webb with five assists, while Smith also led the team in steals (3) and blocks (1).
UCF returns to action on Saturday, February 19 when they host Campbell at 2 p.m. in their last home game of the 2004-05 season. Tickets for Saturday's game are still available. Adults are $5.
