DOTHAN, Ala. - Shelby Weber recorded her second career double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points as UCF falls to Stetson, 61-59, in the semifinal round of the 2005 Coca-Cola Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Championship. The Golden Knights end their season with a 19-10 record, while the Hatters (16-13) advance to the championship game to be played tomorrow.

Weber was 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line for the night. Ali Roberts netted 19 points for the Knights, while also hitting her first career three-pointer. Roberts and Weber each had a block for the Black and Gold, while Roberts also led in assists with four. Shayla Smith and Claudia Johnson paced the team in steals with two each.

The Golden Knights struck first when Smith hit a jumper less than a minute in. The score was 6-0 in favor of the Knights before Stetson scored their first basketball. The Hatters then outscored UCF 11-5 over the next four minutes making the score 11-11.

The Black and Gold answered the Hatters' run with an 11-5 run of their own to make the score 22-16 with 4:29 to go. The half ended with UCF up, 32-21, after going on a 10-5 run.

All nine of UCF's players scored in the first half with Roberts and Weber leading the way with six. Weber also led the team in rebounds after grabbing four offensive boards and four defensive boards for a total of eight. Johnson paced the Knights in steals with two. Roberts and LaShay King each had two assists, while Roberts also had one block.

Nefertiti Walker led Stetson at the end of the first half with 11 points after going 8-for-8 from the free throw line and 1-for-3 from behind the arc. Walker and Dee Matheney paced the Hatters in rebounds with five each.

 

 

The second half started off the same way the first did with Smith hitting a jumper less than a minute in. Stetson started to chip away at UCF's 13-point lead by hitting five free throws to make it 34-26.

Stetson took the lead for the first time in the game with 8:10 to go in the half after going on a 20-11 run. The lead then went back-and-forth over the next minute before Stetson took it for good with 7:07 to go.

The Hatters took a four-point lead a few minutes later when Walker hit a three. The Knights stayed in the game, never letting Stetson jump out to a big lead. In the last five minutes of the game, Roberts netted eight of UCF's 12 including hitting a game-tying three with 16 seconds to go.

Stetson took the ball to their end of the court before calling a time-out with seven seconds to go. Once the teams came out of the huddles, the Hatters put the ball into the hands of Kristy Brown who hit a buzzer-beating jumper to win the game.

Brown recorded a double-double of her own after netting 12 points and grabbing 14 boards for Stetson. Walker scored 20 for the Hatters, while Janene Maclin was also in double digits with 10 points. Kim Manning led Stetson in steals with three, while JoAnn Smith and Lucy Martinez each had three assists.

The UCF women's basketball team will return in the 2005-06 season as a member of Conference USA taking on UAB, Southern Miss, DePaul and others.
