CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF women's basketball team's perfect start to the season came to an end Saturday night in its 62-52 loss at Charlotte. The Knights (4-1) dropped their first game to end the program's best opening streak in nearly three decades.
Freshman Zykira Lewis led the Knights with 14 points and was one rebound shy of her first-career double-double. Junior Andrea Hines also reached double figures with a season-best 13 points, one point off her career high.
UCF's offense was clicking in the first minutes of the game to take a 10-5 lead, but soon after the hoop turned against the Knights as shot after shot rimmed out. UCF suffered through more than six minutes of scoreless play while the 49ers (2-3) were able to capitalize off post play and transition offense.
Charlotte had outscored the Knights, 24-7, with 2.7 seconds left on the clock - just enough time for freshman Jordan Jackson to dribble across half court and bank a buzzer-beating bomb to inch the gap, 29-20, at halftime.
The 49ers chipped in a couple of quick baskets after the break, and the Knights couldn't breach the 10-point threshold. Lewis tried to lead the charge for a late comeback with eight of UCF's final 15 points, but the push came too late.
Sophomore Briahanna Jackson, who was held under 10 points for the first time this season, capped the score with a 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds to go, 62-52.
