ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF women's basketball team played a solid 33 minutes of basketball on Monday night. Unfortunately, it was the other seven minutes that did the Knights in against Middle Tennessee in a 63-51 decision.
A second-half lull allowed the Blue Raiders (7-3) to go on a 13-1 run and escape Orlando with their sixth victory in a row. It marked the first time this season that UCF (7-3) dropped a home contest and posted consecutive losses.
Sophomore Briahanna Jackson paced the Knights with 16 points and swiped a game-high six steals - one shy of her season best. Senior Sara Djassi added 13 points for her fifth-straight game of double digits.
After Djassi swished a 3-pointer to give the Knights their first lead of the game, 11-10, with 12:29 to go, neither team led by more than 3 points the remainder of the half.
The Blue Raiders snuck in two free throws from Shanice Cason just before the break to walk into the locker room with a 31-28 edge.
UCF junior forward Brittni Montgomery started off the second half with an and-1 to tie up the score, and once again the teams were back volleying for definitive control. Jackson knotted the score at 39 with a jumper in the paint with a little more than 12 minutes on the clock.
From there, however, UCF stalled out as MT guard Laken Leonard hit her only trey of the game to spark her team on what turned out to be the game-deciding run.
UCF managed to cut the deficit to 54-48 with 3:30 remaining, but senior standout Ebony Rowe, who scored a game-high 22 points, netted back-to-back layups in 16 seconds that stole the Knights' momentum, allowing the Blue Raiders to hold on for the win.
The Knights host Iona at 1 p.m. Saturday in their final game before the Christmas break. The men's team will then play at 4 p.m. versus Rio Grande as part of the Jackson Hewitt UCF Holiday Classic.
