FIU's Milena Tomova and Eva Makela each recorded a double-double as the Golden Panthers defeated UCF in the final game of the Christmas Tournament 66-55. The Golden Knights fell to 3-6 on the season while the Panthers improved to 8-2.
Jeralynn Campbell led UCF with 11 points while playing in eight minutes. Campbell was 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
Tomova scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Makela netted 12 points with 10 boards for their double-doubles.
FIU took the lead from the first basket of the game and never gave it up. UCF was down by as many as 17 at one point in the second half of the game.
In the first half of action, Tomova had recorded 13 of her 26 points and 7 of her 13 rebounds for FIU. The Knights went down by as many as 15 twice before fighting back to within three. UCF began to fight back with 10:19 left in the first half and outscored FIU 17-6. The Knights and the Panthers went into halftime with FIU up 27-24.
In the second half, FIU came out hitting three of their first four shots to extend their lead to 11. FIU took a 17 point lead twice in the second half, their largest of the game, with 12:31 and 6:45 left. The Panthers outscored the Knights 14-5 in the first eight minutes of play in the second half.
UCF returns to action on January 3 when they return to conference play and host Florida Atlantic at 7:00 p.m. The 14 days off will mark the longest of the season for the Knights. Tickets are still available for the game. Adults are $5. Youth age 17 and under and seniors age 55 and older pay $3.
