ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - It has been 21 years since the UCF women's basketball team played on New Year's Day, so when the Knights tip off at 4 p.m. Wednesday against the defending national champion, it's going to be quite a way to ring in 2014.

UCF (8-4, 1-0) will host its first American Athletic Conference opponent in undefeated No. 1 UConn (13-0, 1-0) on ESPN3. UConn is the first top-ranked team to visit CFE Arena and is the first nationally ranked conference opponent the Knights have hosted.

Although the two teams have never met, UCF head coach Joi Williams will see some familiar faces on the other side of the court.

In the summer of 2010, Williams served as an assistant for the U-18 National Team that won the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship for women. The next summer she was an assistant with the U-19 squad that won the World Championships in Chile.

Both of those teams featured current Huskies Bria Hartley and Stefanie Dolson (2010 and 2011) and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck (2011). With the exception of Tuck, the others each earned a spot on the John R. Wooden Award, the Wade Trophy and the Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch lists.

UConn has won the NCAA title in three of the last five years and boasts an NCAA record eight-straight 30-win seasons to its credit. The Huskies are 308-14 all-time when playing as the nation's No. 1 ranked team in the Associated Press poll.

Season tickets, mini-plans and group packages are still available by calling (407) UCF-1000 or visiting UCFKnights.com.
