UCF Challenge Day 3 Results
SORRENTO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team finished fourth Tuesday at the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club to record its top showing in six years at the event, which is recognized as one of the premier tournaments in the country. The Knights concluded the three-day tournament at 873 (+9).
The event featured six of the top-50 ranked teams in the nation, including No. 3 Auburn, who took the team title at 863 (-1). UCF carded an eight-over 296 during Tuesday's final round. All five golfers in the UCF lineup posted top-25 finishes, led by freshman Katie Mitchell (Fernandina Beach, Fla.), who tied for ninth at 218 (+2).
"I think that this is a great way to start the spring," UCF head coach Courtney Trimble said. "We knew that we had an opportunity to finish really well here. You'd always like to win the tournament, but to come in fourth is a great start for us this spring and we plan to build on it. We were playing with some of the best teams in the country and held our own with them. This is a real confidence booster."
UCF finished seventh at this tournament a year ago.
The Knights entered the final day in fourth after carding a school-record six-under 282 Monday. Freshman Monifa Sealy (Glencoe, Trinidad and Tobago) finished tied for 17th (220, +4) and sophomore Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) and Kaitlyn Price (Jacksonville, Fla.) both tied for 20th at 221 (+5). Pinegger carded a 72 (E) during the final round. Freshman Robyn Doig (Seaforth, Ontario) also contributed to the Knights' strong finish, tying for 25th at six-over 222.
No. 22 Baylor placed second at 865 (+1), followed by Tulane in third at 866 (+2). Eighteen teams competed in the event.
Three Knights competed as individuals at RedTail, with junior Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) tying for 25th.
Auburn's Victoria Trapani took medalist honors after carding a three-round total of 3-under 213.
The tournament was the first of the spring for the Knights. UCF will return to action next Monday at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.
